About the The Original Sazerac Cocktail

Before it called for rye whiskey, the New Orleans classic was made with cognac.

Ingredients in the The Original Sazerac Cocktail

  • .5 oz Absinthe
  • 2 oz Cognac
  • .5 oz Simple syrup (one part sugar, one part water)
  • 3 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters

Garnish: Lemon twist

Glass: Old Fashioned

How to make the The Original Sazerac Cocktail

Rinse a chilled Old Fashioned glass with the absinthe, fill with crushed ice and set aside. Add the remaining ingredients to a mixing glass and fill with ice. Stir. Discard the ice and any excess absinthe from the prepared glass and strain the drink into it. Garnish with a lemon twist.
