A real hot 'toddy' has tea in it. It was a cold remedy, and the tea is where the 'hot' part came from. Your recipe is right for the most part, a peel or a squeezed lemon, and spoon of honey. tsp sugar, and no we wouldn't waste scotch on this where I live, just plain whiskey. This isn't some fancy drink, it's cold medicine.

I remember being young with a cold on a freezing winter night, think I was about 7 or 8, and my granddad gave me my 1st hot toddy to help me sleep. Never had the orange peel, just whiskey, sugar and hot water. Had one almost every winter since (and maybe a few more than one now that I can make them myself).

My favorite toddy is with bourbon. Almost exactly like the article states, but w/o the sugar, maybe some sweet vermouth like a manhattan. start with a 2 or 3 oz of bourbon neat, splash of bitters and vermouth, then top off with just enough hot water to make the drink hot. My other common one is just brandy and hot water. both are great winter warmers that pack a punch.
