Plymouth Gin Essential Facts

  • Plymouth’s Black Friars Distillery dates back to 1431, when it was built as monastery.
  • All of the brand’s gin is made in just a single pot still, which was installed in 1855.
  • Not only can you take a tour of the distillery, but there’s also an on-site café and a store selling Plymouth merchandise.

Try it in a gin Rickey or French 75. Dryness is perfect with prosecco in the 75 or in a classic gin Rickey, yum!

Plymouth gin is the best gin I've tasted so far. Of the London dry variety, Bombay was previously my go-to, not that it isn't good, but it seems so clunky and unsophisticated compared to Plymouth. Beefeater seems harsh. Gordon's is overpoweringly junipery, and Hendrick's is too perfumy. Plymouth is smooth, like a good small batch liquor, and it's flavours just melt across my palate. I'll have to visit the distillery next time I'm that side of the pond.

Unfortunately, Plymouth Navy Strength Gin is not currently sold in America. (In fact, it's one of our most wanted bottles sold outside the US: http://liquor.com/articles/ingredient-hunter-liquor.) You'll have to stock up the next time you find yourself in the UK.

After 5 years - still think Plymouth Navy Strength tastes the best. Where can one get the Navy Gin in the US?

Not to mention the amazing refectory bar upstairs :)
A staple on any backbar and definately a benchmark for any martini lover!
