How you should drink Dewar’s

I remember ordering Dewar's and ginger ale while hanging out with friends in the late '90s and bartenders would smirk at my selection. Now, its a suggested "way to drink". Was I ahead of my time or were some bartenders just a wee bit too snobbish?
