The way you like to fix your Scotch—neat, on the rocks, with soda or in a cocktail—is, of course, your business. (Don’t let anybody tell you otherwise.) And a whole industry has sprung up to supply you with a range of accoutrements to ensure that your dram is as good as it can possibly be.
So if you drink your whisky with ice, you can now use silicone molds to create jumbo frozen spheres (pictured above) that will take ages to melt: Try the one made by Tovolo ($20 for a set of two). Are you more of a square? The company also sells the King Cube Ice Tray ($8.50) that produces giant two-inch cubes.
For a truly old-school experience, freeze granite pieces that chill a spirit without any dilution. (For the record, water does actually help to open up the whisky, but, again, to each his own.) The On the Rocks set from the aptly named Sea Stones includes six stones found on New England beaches, a wood tray and two tumblers ($34).
And when you want to enjoy a highball, firms like Fever-Tree make an array of gourmet bubbly mixers. In addition to the brand’s fine tonic and club soda, it just introduced a new Naturally Light Ginger Beer (500 mL for $3) and a Sparkling Lemon soda (four 200-mL bottles for $6).
Purists should consider Uisge Source, which bottles water from Scottish springs and wells in Speyside, Islay and the Highlands. That way, you can add a splash of H2O from the region where your single malt was distilled. Currently, the products are available online from a UK store, and the company is looking for an American distributor.
